About

Jóhanna Kristbjörg Sigurðardóttir is an Icelandic artist living in Antwerpen, Belgium.

She explores how metaphorical and symbolic language can be used as a tool to evoke new manifestations and impressions. Her works are built around a poetic and imagery approach that tries to create connections between different media, forming a dialogue that reflects both her personal journey and a broader human experience.

Jóhanna engages in what is within her reach: experience, memory, material, interests, circumstances, culture, knowledge, context, beliefs, and so on. Followed by the act of doing, looking, and moving, which brings forth a playful atmosphere combined within the flow of mixed media, materials, open forms, and a direct color palette.

Rather than going for immediate understanding, Jóhanna focused on exploring broader connections between the space, works, and the viewer by using questions as a guiding principle that leads to new interpretations. A recurring theme in her work is a search for balanced movement within stillness, drawn from either memory, the present moment, or the immediate future.

Jóhanna graduated with B.A from the Icelandic Academy of the Arts, M.A in Fine Arts from KASK, Gent and is postgraduate from HISK, Higher Institute for Fine Arts in 2015.

Jóhanna has shown her works internationally and is currently teaching at the installation department at KASK, Gent.
